T.W. Lawson Diaries, 1915-1917.

Lawson's handwritten diary in two volumes, dated May 1915 to 9 July 1917. The diary recounts Lawson's joining of the Royal Engineers (at age 29), his four-month training period, and his initial deployment into France. Subsequent daily entries contain short accounts of life on the front line. Subjects include trench building and maintenance, German attacks and bombardments (especially gas attacks) and British responses, artillery fire, casualties, weather conditions, and letters from home. Battles mentioned include the Battle of the Somme (1916). Acquired as part of the William B. Hamilton Collection of British Manuscripts. (02-049).
